  • Erie was founded in 1795 after purchase of the Erie Triangle.
  • Erie is known as the Flagship City, in honor of the U.S. Brig Niagara, the flagship for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. The Flagship Niagara was reconstructed and relaunched in 1989, and is currently docked in Erie. It is the official state ship of Pennsylvania.
  • Erie is home to Waldameer Park, which opened in 1896 and is one of the oldest amusement parks in the United States.
