PJM Presents at FERC Technical Conference on Energy Storage

PJM presented at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Nov. 9 technical conference that considered the use of electricity storage resources as transmission assets.

Steven Herling, vice president – Planning, and Eric Hsia, manager – Performance Compliance, participated in panels that discussed how and when electricity storage could be used as a transmission asset; how storage would be compensated in such instances; and if and how storage would be able to provide ancillary services or be a source of energy while also being a transmission asset.

PJM submitted a statement (PDF) to the commission Nov. 4 before the technical conference, which spoke to “Utilization in the Organized Markets of Electric Storage Resources as Transmission Assets Compensated Through Transmission Rates, for Grid Support Services Compensated in Other Ways, and for Multiple Services.”
