Fun facts:

  • Every Feb. 2 since 1886, famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob to predict the weather for the rest of winter. If Phil sees his shadow, says the legend, there will be six more weeks of winter. But if he doesn’t, there will be an early spring.
  • Thousands of Phil’s followers descend upon Gobbler’s Knob each year to witness the creature’s predictions.
  • According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, there has been only one Punxsutawney Phil. He sips from an “elixir of life” each summer to magically extend his life seven more years.
