Corporate Social Responsibility is a broad term that can involve philanthropy, volunteerism, and a way for employees to feel more connected.
At PJM Interconnection, it’s all of that and the power behind what we do in the community. Our culture of caring is driven by our employees, supported by our leadership and recognized by our communities.
PJM is sometimes described as “air traffic control” for the electricity industry. While we have an awesome responsibility at work, our employees take tremendous pride in what they do off-hours.
Last year, PJM employees served 5,400 breakfasts at an area homeless shelter, provided 350 holiday gifts to local families and sent 225 pounds of Halloween candy to deployed troops to give them a taste of home. Our employees donated coats for children in need, Thanksgiving meals to struggling families and employees donated money to non-profits across the Greater Philadelphia region.
Our outreach, volunteering and donations made by our employees have been recognized with the Main Line Chamber of Commerce Gives Back Award in the large corporation category. We also received the United Way Impact Award from the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, which recognizes outstanding volunteerism and charitable contributions.
PJM recently kicked off its 2018 United Way campaign. Every employee is encouraged to spend a day giving back by volunteering in the community. Last year, nearly 300 employees participated in the United Way campaign volunteer day program, and we are looking forward to even more helping hands out in the community this year.
PJM employees also inspire the next generation of energy professionals by actively supporting engagement in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) disciplines. By sharing our gifts through career fairs, job shadowing and mentoring, PJM employees ensure local students are exposed to learning opportunities in STEAM subjects. It’s gratifying to not only help our communities thrive today, but also plant the seeds for tomorrow’s energy leaders.
At PJM, we recognize that bringing light to our community involves more than electricity and transmission lines. It means giving back to our neighbors and making a difference in the communities where we live and work. We encourage other companies to embrace our culture of caring and help to make a difference.
