Learning Center Page Details PJM’s Gas/Electric Coordination Efforts

855

Coordination between the natural gas and electric industries is increasingly critical as the interdependency between the two energy sources continues to grow, particularly in times of harsh weather conditions.

Natural gas has been the dominant fuel type for generators in the PJM region since 2015, when it surpassed coal. Since 2014, the PJM Gas/Electric Coordination Team has been working to increase industry collaboration to improve operational awareness and preparedness in the event of a gas supply disruptions.

The PJM team is focused on all facets of the natural gas supply chain, assessing any operational risk to the gas generation fleet within the PJM footprint across 13 states and the District of Columbia.

Find out more about PJM’s efforts at the Gas/Electric Industry Coordination section of the PJM Learning Center.

As part of ongoing enhancements and additions to the site, the section has been updated to reflect:

  • How the evolving resource mix, incorporating increased intermittent resources, will put additional reliance on the performance of the natural gas system
  • The increasing importance of coordination with the natural gas industry
  • PJM’s continuing work with stakeholders to identify operational and market opportunities to increase fuel security in order to maintain a reliable and resilient electric grid

The Learning Center is your 101-level education resource dedicated to explaining, in simple terms, the energy industry and PJM’s role in keeping the power flowing.
