PJM has issued a Cold Weather Alert for the ComEd service area for Jan. 31.
A Cold Weather Alert notifies PJM and member company personnel to prepare facilities for expected extreme cold weather conditions when actual temperatures fall near or below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Low temperatures are expected to be in the low single digits in the ComEd region, which includes Chicago and other parts of northern Illinois.
Transmission and generation owners must take extra care to maintain equipment, so that it does not freeze. During a Cold Weather Alert, PJM may also cancel or postpone planned maintenance outages in order to ensure availability of sufficient resources.
As of 8:30 a.m. Jan. 30, PJM’s forecast load for Jan. 31 is expected to be around 111,000 MW. PJM’s all-time winter peak is 143,295 MW, set on Feb. 20, 2015.
