PJM Issues Hot Weather Alert for May 23 for Mid-Atlantic and Southern Regions

1025

PJM has issued a Hot Weather Alert for May 23 for the Mid-Atlantic and southern regions of its footprint. Temperatures are anticipated to go above 90 degrees with high humidity, which drives up the demand for electricity.

A Hot Weather Alert helps PJM and utility partners coordinate the flow of energy and avoid capacity problems on the grid.

It prepares transmission and generation personnel and facilities for extreme heat and/or humidity that may cause capacity problems on the grid. PJM works with transmission and generation operators to determine if they can defer or cancel any maintenance or testing on their facilities.

The Mid-Atlantic region includes the Atlantic City Electric, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Delmarva Power, Jersey Central Power & Light, Met-Ed, Penelec, PECO, Pepco, PPL Electric Utilities, PSE&G, and Orange & Rockland (Rockland Electric Company) transmission zones.

The PJM southern region consists of Dominion Virginia Power’s service territory.

Preparing for Summer Demand

PJM power system operators have forecasted a peak demand for electricity this summer at approximately 149,000 MW but have performed reliability studies at even higher loads – in excess of 155,000 MW – for the region that includes 13 states and the District of Columbia. PJM has over 185,000 MW of installed generating capacity available to meet customer needs, with sufficient resources available in reserve to cover generation that is unexpectedly unavailable, or for other unanticipated changes in demand.

Last year’s peak demand was approximately 144,000 MW, which occurred on July 20. Total energy use during the summer of 2020 was dampened due to impacts surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. PJM is expecting higher demand this summer, as these impacts have decreased and the forecast calls for warmer-than-normal temperatures.

PJM’s all-time highest power use was 165,563 MW in the summer of 2006. One megawatt can power about 800 homes.
